Walker Zanger's Sonja Mosaic Collection Provides a Modern Context for Tilework Inspired by Mediterranean Hand-Craftsmanship
SYLMAR, Calif., April 11, 2008—The intricate mosaic designs perfected during the height of the Roman Empire are truly inspirational with their delicate weavings and rich marble and limestone hues. Today, the legacy of this meticulous art form is found in the ancient cities of Italy, Turkey, Syria and Tunisia. The individual tiles in the mosaics are hand-cut marble and limestone—some are even sourced from ancient Roman quarries—and are painstakingly assembled by master craftsmen of Tunisia where the artistry and technique are kept alive today.
