MARBLE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD AWARDS WALKER ZANGER KEY TO THE CITY
Carrara, Italy Recognizes Stone and Tile Company's Influence In Promoting Signature Stone Throughout The Globe
SYLMAR, Calif., July 21, 2009 -
Carrara, Italy has been home to workers in the marble quarries since the second century B.C. The city's translucent white marble is so superb, it has been used for everything from Trajan's Column in Rome to Michelangelo's immortal David. Now, this great city has recognized Walker Zanger, the world's most comprehensive stone and tile company, with the key to the city in honor of the company's decades-long effort to promote Carrara's renowned marble to the rest of the world.
 The tribute, presented to Walker Zanger by the Mayor of Carrara, Angelo Zubbani, is more than a simple "key": it is a medal representing the great city, carved by the famous Carrara sculptor Floriano Bodini.
Walker Zanger's relationship with Carrara, Italy extends back to the 1950s, when Leon Zanger, Walker Zanger founder and CEO, began exploring the ancient, rich marble quarries of the small town. When Walker Zanger first introduced thin, 3/8-inch marble tile to the United States, that tile, naturally enough, was crafted of fine Carrara marble.
"The very term 'Carrara marble' has entered the vocabulary of architects, designers, and discriminating homeowners as being synonymous with the best," says Jonathan Zanger, president of Walker Zanger. This is not the first official international award for Walker Zanger or its people; Pietro Milani, director
of Walker Zanger Italian operations, was recently honored with the coveted Stella al Meritoro del
Lavoro, or “Medal for Excellence in a Profession,” by the government of Italy for his accomplished
talent in stone hand-craftsmanship.
