New Walker Zanger Tuileries Collection Re-Envisions Traditional Handmade Tile Through a Contemporary Lens
SYLMAR, Calif., Mar. 24, 2011—The Jardin des Tuileries, or Tuileries Garden, bounded by the Seine, the Louvre, and the Place de la Concorde, is like the "Central Park of Paris," a fashionable focal point of the City of Light. It's a fitting inspiration for the new Tuileries Collection of handfinished ceramic wall tiles from Walker Zanger; indeed, the word tuile is French for "tile," and the Tuileries Garden actually sits in a place originally occupied by a clay quarry and tile-making kilns. With its seductive hand-polished glazing, the Tuileries Collection (pronounced "twee-uh-ree") draws its influences from sources as varied as 19th Century block-print fabric, early 20th Century fashion, and classical wrought iron decoration.
With the Tuileries Collection, Walker Zanger brings a fresh, updated look to a classic motif, reborn in clean and simple decorative patterns—well suited for today's refined take on traditional style. Colors run the gamut from traditional honey and oxblood to more contemporary grays and browns. The hand-made field tiles feature subtle "pooling" in the glaze that captures and reflects light, imparting a warmth and richness impossible to achieve with machine finishes. The collection includes four different field-tile sizes and three architectural moldings, as well as eight decorative
liners, borders and field tiles in a palette of 12 colors. The decorative tiles are perfect for a traditional look; while the field tiles, when used separately, create a more modern look all their own.
