5 Reasons to Visit San Miguel de Allende

Mexico’s San Miguel de Allende currently holds the Travel + Leisure title for World’s Best City to visit, and we couldn’t agree more.

San Miguel de Allende is known for its fusion of historic charm and high-end amenities. Visitors can meander along the charming cobblestone streets, shop handcrafted textiles and specialty items from local artisans, have a locally sourced lavender cappuccino at an outdoor café, and spend the evening enjoying the views at one of the many rooftop bars. Day trips to hot springs, hiking trails, and world-renowned cultural sites top the list of things to do in San Miguel de Allende. This 16th-century city is for everyone: nature lovers, history buffs, foodies, designers, artists and anyone looking for a cultural getaway to a dynamic location off the beaten path.

The Overall Vibe

San Miguel de Allende is alive with culture, art, history, food, and personality. While people in the American culture tend to have routines and often don’t have a lot of interaction, everyone is out and about in this more traditional town. You know your neighbor and you shop locally. San Miguel de Allende is alive in many other senses as well including the aesthetically pleasing architectural design and vibrancy of colors. Basically, whatever kind of vibe you’re going for, you just end up with. You find it just walking around.

Another intriguing aspect of the city is its slower pace. Because almost 20% of people living here are expatriates from many different countries, there is a leisurely European-style mindset where you eat late, you go to bed late, and you wake up late. If you’re an early riser, there might be a coffee shop open at 7:30 a.m. but the rest of the city doesn’t open until 9:30 a.m. When you’re in San Miguel de Allende, you take in every moment. You sit down and eat — you don’t take it to-go. You just live.

Worldly Artisans

Due to the intersection of local influences and global design sense, textiles, hardware, and interior design have a traditional Mexican feel with a unique worldly flair. Items tend to be of higher quality. For example, textiles have thicker, better quality yarn. There are also artisans that create stamped tin and brass accessories like frames, lanterns, and light fixtures. With upwards of 2000 doors along the streets of El Centro, door design in San Miguel de Allende is something to behold. They are different carvings, paint colors, shapes, and handmade hardware, such as brass and iron door knockers.

Character in Design

You'll notice that considerable character and detail went into designing a space. When it comes to design and architecture, San Miguel de Allende has a lot of heart.
